Grant funding: Funding from the Australia Council for the Arts

The Garret is thrilled to receive funding in the latest round of funding from the Australia Council for the Arts (in the Literature category).

It is not even a year since we launched The Garret (our birthday is 3 November 2017), and this grant helps to solidify our reputation as the leading Australian podcast on the craft of writing. Indeed, in a world where new podcasts appear every day, The Garret was the only literature-based podcast to receive funding from the Australia Council in this round.

This grant will enable us to expand our offerings to include more interstate writers as guests; pay for production costs; and increase marketing and promotion. We are already talking to organisations about partnering with them to bring established writers to Melbourne to be interviewed for The Garret, and while here to participate in workshops and other events – to maximise the value of having such writers in Melbourne.

This round of funding from the Australia Council saw $6.1m invested in 221 projects delivered by 147 individual artists, 25 groups and 49 small-to-medium arts organisations across Literature, Dance, Music, Theatre, Emerging and Experimental Arts, Community Arts and Cultural Development, and Visual Arts.

According to Australia Council CEO Tony Grybowski, ‘Since the new grants model opened in early 2015 we have received nearly 10,000 applications and we’re seeing an increasingly diverse range of artists creating and presenting art in new and innovative ways. We’re excited to be able to empower artists to push boundaries and deliver compelling works.’

We at The Garret we are delighted and somewhat humbled to have been included – and we thank the Australia Council for their support.
