The Garret is all about the craft of writing. And what better way to hone your writing craft than to learn from one of the best writers writing today?

In 2018 we are hosting a series of Masterclasses with Writers Victoria. These masterclasses will be taught by leading Australian writers for the benefit of established writers. Entry is by application to Writers Victoria.

Expand and develop your skills in short story writing in this hands-on masterclass for emerging writers.

Examine the elements of a successful short story, including characterisation and narrative point of view through close reading and writing exercises. Consider excerpts from model short stories across a range of genres in order to reflect on, discuss, and implement those techniques in your own writing. Participants are encouraged to bring a short story they are currently working on in order to further workshop it in class. Exclusive to Writers Victoria members.

You will learn how to how to write an engaging beginning to a short story, the elements of characterisation, the importance of point of view in a short story, how to take a plot in an unexpected direction, and how and why to experiment with form and style.
