In 2018 we are hosting a series of Masterclasses with Writers Victoria. These masterclasses will be taught by leading Australian writers for the benefit of established writers. Entry is by application to Writers Victoria.
WRITING SHORT STORIES
Expand and develop your skills in short story writing in this hands-on masterclass for emerging writers.
Examine the elements of a successful short story, including characterisation and narrative point of view through close reading and writing exercises. Consider excerpts from model short stories across a range of genres in order to reflect on, discuss, and implement those techniques in your own writing. Participants are encouraged to bring a short story they are currently working on in order to further workshop it in class. Exclusive to Writers Victoria members.
You will learn how to how to write an engaging beginning to a short story, the elements of characterisation, the importance of point of view in a short story, how to take a plot in an unexpected direction, and how and why to experiment with form and style.
Ryan O’Neill is the author of The Weight of a Human Heart and Their Brilliant Careers. His fiction has appeared in numerous journals and anthologies including The Best Australian Stories and Meanjin. Their Brilliant Careers was shortlisted for the 2017 Christina Stead Prize and the 2017 Miles Franklin Award, and won the 2017 Prime Minister’s Literary Award for fiction. He teaches at the University of Newcastle.
In collaboration with Writers Victoria, we have previously held workshops for emerging writers with Tony Birch, Toni Jordan, Sofie Laguna and John Marsden. In 2018 we began a series of masterclasses, the first of which was taught by Charlotte Wood.
