Stella is thrilled to announce award-winning writer Alice Pung OAM as the 2023 Stella Prize Chair of Judges.

Pung is the bestselling author of fiction, non-fiction, and children's literature. Her first novel, Laurinda, won the Ethel Turner Prize at the 2016 NSW Premier’s Literary Awards, and her most recent novel, One Hundred Days, was shortlisted for the 2022 Miles Franklin Literary Award. She was awarded an Order of Australia Medal for services to literature in 2022.

Pung will be joined on the Judging Panel by broadcaster and bibliophile, Astrid Edwards; essayist and literary critic, Beejay Silcox; Walkley Award-winning journalist, writer, and broadcaster, Jeff Sparrow; and Gomeroi poet, essayist, and legal scholar, Alison Whittaker.

Together, they will select the most original, excellent and engaging book as the winner of the 2023 Stella Prize.

  • 📖 Robert Watkins (@arrjaydub) was joking when he said this in our latest interview. But we all know publishing can be hard to understand and even harder to enter. So, listen to Robert talk about how became a publisher (his career path is quite unconventional) and consider how you can too.

Transcript: The reason you don't know the answer is because, literally, the publishing industry is a weird secret society.

  • 🎙 Robert Watkins (@arrjaydub) is the Publishing Director of @ultimopress. He has over 20 years experience in the Australian book industry having worked in book retail, sales, marketing, publicity, publishing and more recently as Head of Literary at Hachette Australia.

Robert’s love for a good story well told has led to publishing some of Australia’s most acclaimed contemporary authors, including Maxine Beneba Clarke, Claire G. Coleman, Sarah Schmidt and Michael Mohammed Ahmad. He is an advocate for progressive and inclusive publishing that speaks to contemporary issues, whether that be in narrative non-fiction or literary and reading group fiction.

  • 📖 Ever wondered how crime writer @dervlamctiernan creates the tension within the story?

Transcript: Constraints help with your creativity and make the story better... The tighter the box I'm in, the harder my imagination is working.
